How much laptop storage do you really need?

Storage should match your files, applications, and tolerance for external drives. Start with how you work rather than the largest capacity available.

Typical workflows

Web, office, and study tasks can often fit comfortably on a modest SSD with cloud storage. Photo, video, music, and development workflows need more room for active projects and local caches.

Check upgradeability

Many thin laptops have fixed storage. If the drive cannot be replaced, buying extra capacity at purchase can be cheaper and simpler than working around a full device later.

Compare the complete configuration

Match processor, memory, display, storage type, warranty, and operating system. A laptop with more storage but less memory may not be the better value.
